Pikey Peak at 4065m is a small mountain located in the lower Solu Khumbu region. Pikey hosts sweeping views of nearly all of Nepal’s Himalayan range. It is a quiet but famous trek. Sir Edmond Hillary said that the view of Sagarmatha or Mt. Everest from Pikey was his favorite in all of Nepal. Pikey was only recently opened as a trekking destination. Pikey, pronounced Pee-Kay, has two summits, Goley-Pikey and Chawa-Pikey. These names are from the Sherpa language and refer to deities of different local Sherpa clans. This trip is well suited for any level of trekker; we have a variety of itineraries to suit families with kids, people who wish for shorter days and less altitude, and we can also accommodate ambitious trekkers.
No matter who is trekking, Pikey Peak provides the opportunity of a lifetime to see Mt. Everest and six other peaks over 8,000m: Mt. Everest South Summit, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Makalu, in the west Annapurna and Manaslu, and in the east the third highest peak in the world Mt. Kanchanjunga. Also clear are Mt. Thamserku, Numbur Himal, Gauri Shankar, and the Langtang Range. Pikey has breathtaking sunrise and sunset views when weather allows. In addition to the peak we will also see Monasteries like Thupten Chholing where there are more than 500 nuns and Tolu Monastery, the second oldest in Nepal.
Because this area is the home of Everest Six-Summits Owner/Operator Mingmar Sherpa, this trek also offers the opportunity to see many Sherpa villages including Mingmar’s home, Damar, where trekkers get to experience local tradition and culture in places rarely visited by tourists. Damar Village is located on a remote hillside surrounded by oak, rhododendron, bamboo, juniper, and pine forest and rolling mountains. There are 8 Sherpa households surrounded by terraces for farming and animals including nak (female yak) and goats. Along the route are many types flora and fauna and different species of birds, which your guide will tell you about.
This region is good for trekking year-round, but it is most beautiful during March-May for sighting blooming rhododendron, magnolia, wild orchid and different types of junipers. Those who wish to trek during December- February will be able to enjoy the snow and have stunning clear views of the peaks as this is generally a drier time of year.
